Welcome to the Barracudas Class page!

We are a Year 3 & 4 class.

Please find below the learning activities for this week. If you and your child need to self-isolate due to COVID-19, your child will still be able to access the same learning as the children take part in at school. If you have any questions, please contact me through ClassDojo. You can upload the work your child has completed in their ClassDojo portfolio. If you need login details for ClassDojo, please contact the school office.

Best wishes,

Ms Malcomson

Learning activities @School Term 2

Our topic this term is 'Burps, Bottoms and Bile', a science topic with a focus on the human body and the digestive system in particular, healthy living and where our food comes from. For more information, please see our termly newsletter (published shortly).

We will be developing our reading skills this term using Demon Dentist by David Walliams. We are also using this book for our writing inspiration: writing a diary.

Reading

Buster Book Club will be returning. The children can send in their reading minutes on Thursdays via ClassDojo. Please only send your reading record in on a Thursday so that we can check them, then they will come straight home that day.

  • Take turns to make plans and predictions before reading: ‘I wonder if… what do you think?’ ‘You think… Oh, I thought…’
  • Recap to check ideas and understanding as your child is reading: ‘So, you think that…’ ‘Did you expect…to happen?’ ‘Why do you think that happened?’
  • Use encouragement and praise to keep children engaged in reading: ‘What brilliant ideas…let’s see what happens.’ ‘You thought so carefully about... What might happen now?’
  • Share prior knowledge and past experiences that link to what is being read: ‘Have you learnt about…at school?’ ‘Do you remember when we watched…and found out about…’
  • Tune-in and listen to your child – be curious about their interests: ‘I didn’t know you knew so much about…’ ‘I love reading stories about...with you.’

At school we use the Reading Rainbow to give children a reading focus (a lens to read with) and sentence starters to answer questions.

A new story book that aims to help children understand and come to terms with COVID-19 has been produced. With the help of a fantasy creature, Ario, “My Hero is You, How kids can fight COVID-19!” explains how children can protect themselves, their families and friends from coronavirus and how to manage difficult emotions when confronted with a new and rapidly changing reality.

Nosy Crow is an award-winning, small, independent children’s book publisher. They made this free digital book because they felt that children and parents might find it useful.

Spellings

Please continue to read and spell as many of these words as you can. Try setting yourself a challenge for 10 words per week! These are the Year 3/4 statutory spellings.
