The venue houses the Kew Millenium Seed Bank which is a huge Science laboratory aiming to develop a collection of seeds from every plant on the planet.

Jellyfish and Marlin spent the day examining plants under extremely powerful microscopes and marveling at such close-up views. They explored some of the grounds in search of seeds from a variety of species, in order to determine how they were dispersed for future growth. The children had an enlightening time observing 'real' scientists at work who were sorting seeds from abroad and dissecting them. They even had the chance to handle the largest seed in the world from the coco de mer plant.

Everybody really enjoyed the day and were buzzing with their new knowledge all the way back to school.
http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/18358672_803328743156074_6988289198252220971_o.jpgThu, 11 May 2017 11:27:58 GMTKiller Whales are Super Scientists!http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-05-05-killer-whales-are-super-scientistshttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-05-05-killer-whales-are-super-scientists
Killer Whales invited their 'Buddy Class' Sardines along to their classroom on Wednesday to watch a science experiment.

Mrs Sarkies had given Killer Whales a science backpack which a child takes home every weekend. They played brilliantly in their first game and with goals from Fred and Stan they beat Beckley 2 - 0. The team then faced Peasmarsh who played well against them and it was a scrappy game. Despite all the chances they drew 0 - 0.

They qualified in the semi-final and faced a very good Guestling team. The team started fast and with a superb strike from Fred they took the lead. They battled on, both teams had chances but they held on to their 1 - 0 win which put them in the final where they were up against Winchelsea.

The game was very close, both teams standing strong then Dec took a throw-in, which caused chaos in the Winchelsea box and was turned in by one of their defenders. It was once again a very close game with Captain Liam making his trademark crunching tackles and Kian making some fantastic saves.

Kian took a brilliant goal kick which landed at Fred's feet for him to calmly slot through the keeper's legs into the goal, 2.- 0. If they don't go to get fresh water, they will just get sicker and sicker and may even die. Poppy, Greta, Rocky, Oliver and Mitchel were selected carry a bucket weighing the same as a bucket of water around the hall during the rest of the assembly.

Lisa then explained that when £15.00 has been raised it covers the cost for one child to have safe water. £30.00 will fund a toilet for a whole family and £50.00 a hand pump for clean water. Minnows and Sardines children were very pleased to learn that the money they raised from their collection outside the front door last week will fund a pump!

Lisa, Livvie and Rose then went into the Reception classes to work with the children on pictures of the weather and raindrops. These will be exhibited at a 'pop-up gallery' in Rye Retreat during the week commencing 24th April leading up to their cake sale on Saturday 29th April. The children came in sporting some excellent Victorian outfits and experienced the life of a Scholar first hand. The children got a taster of how different lessons were back then and quickly learnt that Victorian teachers were not people to mess with!

They were able to handle real life Victorian artefacts and also created some beautiful art work inspired by William Morris. As you can tell from the pictures, a great time was had by all and they are positively beaming with knowledge. While they were digging to build the new school extension one of the builders found two very old pieces of paper. One was a letter and one was a story and a map.

When Mr Playford read the letter and story he soon discovered it was written by an explorer from the Arctic. Mr Playford knew that Year 3 were currently learning about Antarctica and the Arctic so he took the letter and story straight to them. When Mr Gurr and Miss Brunton read the letter and story they couldn't believe their eyes. The letter and story had to be over 50 years old! This is a phenomenal achievement and thanks to the hard work of all the Key Stage 1 staff led by Mrs Alex Wilson.

In their Y2 SATs we are particularly proud of our most able children as we achieved double the National averages for children working at a greater depth of understanding. This is down to the focus on high expectations at Rye Primary – well done KS1.

In their Y6 SATs our children rose to the challenge of much harder tests and have achieved progress scores in line with National data, with particular success for our disadvantaged children. The children all looked absolutely amazing in their costumes and thank you to all those that helped this happen.

Everyone had a fantastic day visiting the museum and then actually walking in the footsteps of the Normans and Saxons on the actual battlefield. The day concluded with a full scale (non-contact) re-enactment of the famous battle. Throughout the day the children were praised not just by the staff but the members of public for their politeness and outstanding behaviour.

We left the Abbey feeling very proud of our Rye Community Primary School children.

http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/images/news/Yr3_Battle_Abbey_charge2.jpgTue, 18 Oct 2016 17:41:55 GMTCongratulations Sharon & Justyna!http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-09-23-congratulations-sharon-justynahttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-09-23-congratulations-sharon-justyna
This morning in assembly we said a huge well done to two members of staff.

Mrs Manktelow has just passed her 'Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young Peoples Workforce', while Miss Bogun who qualified as a teacher in Poland has had her qualification recognised in this country!

Well done both of you!
http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/images/news/Justyna_and_sharon.jpgTue, 18 Oct 2016 17:31:18 GMTYear 4 Trip to Camber Watershttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-09-21-year-4-trip-to-camber-watershttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-09-21-year-4-trip-to-camber-waters
Killer Whales and Stingrays had an amazing time on their trip to Camber Waters yesterday.

They started the day by walking all the way to Camber Castle. The children then did some 'ditch dipping.' This involved using a fishing net to find animals in the ditch. They then put them in small containers and investigated the animals they had found. Barry from Rye Harbour Nature Reserve was able to help them identify a saucer bug, water beetle and water scorpion among many other animals.

After lunch the children then used binoculars to watch birds feeding, swimming, diving and resting. they identified birds such as swans, swallows and ducks.

Later on the children went on a mini beast hunt using the school's new science equipment. This was great fun and the children even managed to find dragon flies and moths as well as Antony the ant!

The long walk home certainly tired the children out but they were still fantastically behaved.
