The venue houses the Kew Millenium Seed Bank which is a huge Science laboratory aiming to develop a collection of seeds from every plant on the planet.

Jellyfish and Marlin spent the day examining plants under extremely powerful microscopes and marveling at such close-up views. They explored some of the grounds in search of seeds from a variety of species, in order to determine how they were dispersed for future growth. The children had an enlightening time observing 'real' scientists at work who were sorting seeds from abroad and dissecting them. Despite all the chances they drew 0 - 0.

They qualified in the semi-final and faced a very good Guestling team. The team started fast and with a superb strike from Fred they took the lead. They battled on, both teams had chances but they held on to their 1 - 0 win which put them in the final where they were up against Winchelsea.

The game was very close, both teams standing strong then Dec took a throw-in, which caused chaos in the Winchelsea box and was turned in by one of their defenders. It was once again a very close game with Captain Liam making his trademark crunching tackles and Kian making some fantastic saves.

Kian took a brilliant goal kick which landed at Fred's feet for him to calmly slot through the keeper's legs into the goal, 2.- 0. For example Linah from Madagascar, who said that collecting water had been the toughest task she had to deal with, however, since WaterAid installed a pump at the back of their house, it is now the easiest task.

There are still hundreds of children who have to walk up to 10 miles morning and evening to collect fresh water, that equates to 35 times around a football pitch! If they don't go to get fresh water, they will just get sicker and sicker and may even die. Poppy, Greta, Rocky, Oliver and Mitchel were selected carry a bucket weighing the same as a bucket of water around the hall during the rest of the assembly.

Lisa then explained that when £15.00 has been raised it covers the cost for one child to have safe water. £30.00 will fund a toilet for a whole family and £50.00 a hand pump for clean water. Minnows and Sardines children were very pleased to learn that the money they raised from their collection outside the front door last week will fund a pump!

Lisa, Livvie and Rose then went into the Reception classes to work with the children on pictures of the weather and raindrops. These will be exhibited at a 'pop-up gallery' in Rye Retreat during the week commencing 24th April leading up to their cake sale on Saturday 29th April. While they were digging to build the new school extension one of the builders found two very old pieces of paper. One was a letter and one was a story and a map.

When Mr Playford read the letter and story he soon discovered it was written by an explorer from the Arctic. Mr Playford knew that Year 3 were currently learning about Antarctica and the Arctic so he took the letter and story straight to them. When Mr Gurr and Miss Brunton read the letter and story they couldn't believe their eyes. The letter and story had to be over 50 years old! Year 3 are currently trying to find out about this explorer and how the story and map could have ever ended up in Rye!

We will keep you updated with the progress!
http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/images/news/16299761_746667272155555_5576815125421552271_o.jpegFri, 27 Jan 2017 13:40:08 GMTFire Brigade visit Rye Primaryhttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-24-fire-brigade-visit-rye-primaryhttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-24-fire-brigade-visit-rye-primary

Seahorses and Clownfish had some very special visitors yesterday when the Fire Brigade came along to school.

The children were fascinated with how the various pieces of equipment worked and they impressed the fire fighters with their sensible questions and answers.

They were even lucky enough to spend some time inside the truck with flashing lights and sirens!

http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/images/news/16142409_745442432278039_6719322424207178107_n.jpegTue, 24 Jan 2017 11:29:32 GMTSkip to win your class a trip!http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-24-skip-to-win-your-class-a-triphttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-24-skip-to-win-your-class-a-trip
Starting next week Mr Sayer will be on the playground at pick-up time every Monday and Wednesday with skipping ropes.

For every five minute session any adult participates in, their chosen class will be awarded one point (five points for every 'Fitness Friday' attended - which follows 'Feel Good Friday').

At the end of the term the class with the most points will win a class trip to the park for the afternoon.

Keep a look out for the running scores on the screen in school and on the playground!

http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.ukTue, 24 Jan 2017 09:47:24 GMTFeel Good Friday!http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-20-feel-good-fridayhttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-20-feel-good-friday

Thank you to everyone who came along to our 'Feel Good Friday' session this morning, it was so good to so many of you!

We hope even more of you will be able to join us next week when we will be holding another free raffle. This is a phenomenal achievement and thanks to the hard work of all the Key Stage 1 staff led by Mrs Alex Wilson.

In their Y2 SATs we are particularly proud of our most able children as we achieved double the National averages for children working at a greater depth of understanding. This is down to the focus on high expectations at Rye Primary – well done KS1.

In their Y6 SATs our children rose to the challenge of much harder tests and have achieved progress scores in line with National data, with particular success for our disadvantaged children. The children then did some 'ditch dipping.' This involved using a fishing net to find animals in the ditch. They then put them in small containers and investigated the animals they had found. Barry from Rye Harbour Nature Reserve was able to help them identify a saucer bug, water beetle and water scorpion among many other animals.

After lunch the children then used binoculars to watch birds feeding, swimming, diving and resting. they identified birds such as swans, swallows and ducks.

Later on the children went on a mini beast hunt using the school's new science equipment. This was great fun and the children even managed to find dragon flies and moths as well as Antony the ant!

The long walk home certainly tired the children out but they were still fantastically behaved. They come to England to train to become doctors, teachers, builders or leaders then go back to their country to share their knowledge and help less fortunate people.

The assembly linked in very well with the Rights Respecting Schools Project which we are currently involved with and the children were eager to hear how just helping one person can make such a difference to so many people, and the fact that everyone around the world should have the same opportunities. They all agreed that "Helping people is awesome!"
http://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/images/news/Bugsy_Pestalozzi.jpgFri, 29 Apr 2016 14:58:30 GMTVictorian Rye Primaryhttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-03-18-victorian-rye-primaryhttp://ryeprimary.e-sussex.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-03-18-victorian-rye-primary
On Friday Sharks and Dolphins were transported back in time to the 19th Century. Andrea will be overseeing the safety aspects of the new build, making sure that fences are erected to keep everyone out and that all possible safety precautions are put in place, while Mark will ensure that the dimensions etc. of the building are correct and it is on track.

Andrea explained the dangers of working on a building site, and therefore the importance of children keeping well away at all times. We have a few sets of safety clothing, hi-vis jackets, safety hard hats, safety gloves and safety glasses which they have left for children to try on.

Morgan Sindall will be installing windows in the fencing and corridors so that children can look through and watch the building take shape.
