Learning activities Term 3

Our topic this term is ‘Stone Age to Iron Age" and has a history focus. The children will be learning about how people lived in the Stone Age and changes that happened from the Stone Age to the Bronze age and the Iron Age. In science, we will focus on Rocks and Soil, classifying different types of rocks, learning about fossils and the scientist Mary Anning. In art, we are going to learn to weave and we'll learn how to manipulate images in computing.  We will also join in with the National Safer Internet Day in February.

Our main texts for this term are 'Stone Age Boy' and 'The Street Beneath our Feet'. We will be writing a story set in the Stone Age and an explanation linked to rocks and soil.

More details about our learning in this term will be posted in the newsletter.

Phonics

Here at Rye, we are very excited to share with you a new phonics programme that we have invested in to teach phonics and reading. Following a recent change in government guidance we have decided to invest in a brand new scheme for teaching early reading in our school. This will impact the way that both phonics and reading are taught.  Phonics will continue to be taught daily to all children but will be taught following a newly released phonics scheme called ‘Little Wandle-Letters and Sounds revised’. This is a very thorough and very rigorous programme which teaches the children the skills they need to read. All children will be working alongside peers with a similar secure phonic knowledge.

Further information about Little Wandle can be found here, including videos on how we sound out each phoneme (sound), how we teach tricky words and blending.
