During these unusual times our teachers are thinking of new ways to connect with their classes, this is increasingly involving new technology! Please understand that our teachers are working hard to regularly set work for children online and to virtually monitor and possibly interact with the children. This may look slightly different for each class at the moment, as each teacher is navigating their own journey with this new technology. Therefore, we ask that you continue to be supportive during these unprecedented times and not necessarily expect instant replies to queries and understand that sometimes feedback may just be a "like or a smiley face"! If we all work together we will come through this stronger and with an increased sense of community! Happy learning!
Welcome to the Clever Clownfish Class page!
We are an amazing Year 1 / 2 class of clever and caring Clownfish.
Our teacher is Miss Brewster and our individual needs assistant is Mrs Borthwick.
Did you know that Clownfish get their name from the bold colour strokes on their body, like a clown's face paint.

Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year.
Our school is one of the many partially closed by the Government to get the infection rate under control. Home Learning will be added to our class webpage. There will also be some 2Do tasks set on Purple Mash. Purple Mash logins are stuck in the front page of your child’s home/school contact book.
We will upload the full timetable of lessons we will be teaching to the children of critical workers and vulnerable children in school every week. Please can you upload the work your child has completed in their Class Dojo portfolio. I am really looking forward to reading your child’s learning and I will mark and reward Dojos for their learning daily.
If you need login details for Class Dojo please contact the school office.
Best wishes, stay safe and well,
Sarah Brewster

Online Safety
Children, remember your e-safety rules: make sure you let your parents know you are online and share what you are learning about.
During this time of remote learning, it has become more fundamental than ever to keep our children safe online. The National Online Safety website provides, among others, guides with tips for parents to do this. We have posted a few of those guides below for your information. Hot off the Press! This week's Spelling List 05.03.2021
With the children's return to school, we are introducing some new spelling groups. I will be contacting you to confirm your child's group.
KS1 Timetable – Term 4, Week 3 08.3.21- 12.3.21
Please follow the links on the timetable to see and download this week's learning activities. It is the same learning that the children will be completing in the bubble.
To support access to learning on different platforms, most work has has been duplicated into PDF documents.
Please do not feel obliged to print off all the pages for the children to work on: we are more than happy for the children to complete the work on paper, for you to photograph and upload to their portfolio on Class Dojo.
All work will be posted by 8:30am in the morning but, as you see, most is posted well before.
**Timetable update **
We are excited to invite you to a Key Stage 1 assembly to start the week at 9:00am on Monday morning. See ClassDojo for further details.
We will sharing our new topic with the children and starting off our English task. Please feel free to adapt the day accordingly and do your phonics at a time that suits you best.

- Recap to check ideas and understanding as your child is reading: ‘So, you think that…’ ‘Did you expect…to happen?’ ‘Why do you think that happened?’
- Use encouragement and praise to keep children engaged in reading: ‘What brilliant ideas…let’s see what happens.’ ‘You thought so carefully about... What might happen now?’
- Share prior knowledge and past experiences that link to what is being read: ‘Have you learnt about…at school?’ ‘Do you remember when we watched…and found out about…’
- Tune-in and listen to your child – be curious about their interests: ‘I didn’t know you knew so much about…’ ‘I love reading stories about...with you.’
Reading Eggs
Rye Primary School have purchased a subscription for all our children to access Reading Eggs. It supports each child’s learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons that allow children to progress at their own rate. The Reading Eggs programme focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success. With interactive animations, fun games, great songs and lots of rewards, Reading Eggs is a great place to learn to read. Children are highly motivated to return again and again. At Reading Eggs, learning to read is enjoyable as well as very rewarding. Every lesson ends with a new book and a new critter to add to your growing collection.
All children have their own login and password, which can be found in their yellow reading record book. However, if you need a reminder, please don't hesitate to contact me on ClassDojo.
Click here for further information about Reading Eggs.

At Rye Community Primary School, we teach phonics at Key Stage 1 using the 'Letters and Sounds' programme. Phonics Play provide a wide range of resources that support this.

Reading
Oxford Owl have a wide range of e-books available to read online. Many are similar to the colour-banded books we use in school and there is a useful guide that links you to the appropriate level of books for your child. In addition, many have an audio facility and some have activities linked to the text.
These can all be found in the Oxford Owl for Home area of their website. We have a class login that you will be able to find in your child's home-school contact book.
Remember also, that reading and re-reading favourite books is an important part of learning to read and developing a love of reading that should not be underestimated so please take time to enjoy family picture books and stories that you already have at home.
Weekly Reading Following feedback from parents, children and Buster Book Club:
We are going to continue to run Busters' Book Club; this is a great scheme which celebrates reading children do outside school. Reading daily is so important and we would like them to read for 15 minutes daily. Even if it isn't their school reading. The children can send in their reading minutes on a Thursday as the classes with the most minutes will win extra treats!
Here are handwriting pages that we use in class. The letters have been grouped as they are formed in similar ways, apart from Blue family which have their own distinctive shapes. Forming letters correctly help the children to begin joining their letters clearly. It's a good idea to make sure that handwriting is practised sitting with a good posture at a table. They can be done independently and, as long as they hold the pencil or pen correctly, they can use any writing equipment they like.
Go for quality over quantity. Although the sheets are A4, only spend 15-20 minutes at a time. Have a break, or use the handwriting as quick early morning activity.
If your child finds letter formation challenging, it's a good idea to write the letters as big as possible. You can even use shampoo or shower gel and write them as large as possible on a tiled wall, shower screen or window! Only focus on one letter at a time.
- Letter formation overview
- Letter families
- Red family
- Orange family
- Yellow family
- Green and Blue families
- Letter family mnemonics (prompts)
-
Letter formation animations: Click here to see how letters are formed. Be warned they don't have the lead strokes we use, but it is a good place to start.
-
Handwriting warm-up exercises: Handy videos demonstrating how you can spend 5 minutes warming-up to write. Choose 1 exercise from each colour group.
