During these unusual times our teachers are thinking of new ways to connect with their classes, this is increasingly involving new technology! Please understand that our teachers are working hard to regularly set work for children online and to virtually monitor and possibly interact with the children. This may look slightly different for each class at the moment, as each teacher is navigating their own journey with this new technology. Therefore, we ask that you continue to be supportive during these unprecedented times and not necessarily expect instant replies to queries and understand that sometimes feedback may just be a "like or a smiley face"! If we all work together we will come through this stronger and with an increased sense of community! Happy learning!

A very warm welcome to Sea Turtles' Class page

We are very proud to be named after one of the most amazing creatures on the whole planet.  Not only did sea turtles exist around 110 million years ago, which means they shared the planet with dinosaurs (yes, that's right, even Tyrannosaurus Rex!), but they can live to about 100 years old.  We think they must be incredibly wise creatures indeed... just like us!

Below, you will find information about our school routine and our learning for the term.

I will be continuing to update this page regularly, so please keep visiting. Following government protocols, information for home learning can be found below.  The work set for remote learning is the same as that which our key-worker children will be doing in school.  Please photograph your child's learning daily and upload it to their portfolio on ClassDojo so that we can celebrate their achievements and award Dojos, as we would do when they are in school.  The key stage 1 team will be in contact with you to give help and support with your child's learning weekly.

I look forward to talking to you soon and seeing you from across the playground as soon as we can (in-line with government guidelines of course!).  In the meantime, if you would like to contact me, you can do so by contacting the school office.

Best wishes, stay safe and well,

Mrs Leigh

Online Safety

Children, remember your e-safety rules: make sure you let your parents know you are online and share what you are learning about.

Parents and carers,

During this time of remote learning, it has become more fundamental than ever to keep our children safe online.  The National Online Safety website provides, among others, guides with tips for parents to do this. We have posted a few of those guides below for your information. Please visit https://nationalonlinesafety.com/hub/guide for more.

Back to School

We're really excited to be welcoming all our children back to school on Monday 8th March!

Sea Turtles

As we approach our return to school it is understandable that there maybe some mixed feelings.  To support our lovely Sea Turtles, I will be holding a special Teams class assembly on Wednesday 3rd March at 1:00pm.  I would love the children to come and share what they are looking forward to when they return on the 8th, and offer them the chance to ask questions that will reassure any worries they may have.

Parents, you are welcome to send me any of their questions via ClassDojo messages if they are reluctant to speak openly in the session, and I will answer their questions in a general and sensitive manner.

The following sheets may also be of use to help reassure your child and help plan and prepare. Please click on the links below.

Please follow the links on the timetable to see and download this week's learning activities.  It is the same learning that the children will be completing in the bubble.
To support access to learning on different platforms, most work has has been duplicated into PDF documents.

Please do not feel obliged to print off all the pages for the children to work on: we are more than happy for the children to complete the work on paper, for you to photograph and upload to their portfolio on Class Dojo. All work will be posted by 8:30am in the morning but, as you see, most is posted well before.

Spellings:

Spellings are set each Friday, and tested the following Friday.  The first spellings for this term will be posted ready for Friday 8th January.  In the meantime, there are spelling and phonics activities for children to complete in Purple Mash.  Please find them set in the 2Dos.
In addition, all children should know how to spell the days of the week by the end of Year 1 (including the capital letter!).  Please help your child learn these key words.

Spelling frame is another site that also has a range of activities to help practise spelling patterns and conventions.

Handwriting:

Here are handwriting pages that we use in class.  The letters have been grouped as they are formed in similar ways, apart from Blue family which have their own distinctive shapes.  Forming letters correctly help the children to begin joining their letters clearly.  It's a good idea to make sure that handwriting is practised sitting with a good posture at a table.  They can be done independently and, as long as they hold the pencil or pen correctly, they can use any writing equipment they like.

Go for quality over quantity. Although the sheets are A4, only spend 15-20 minutes at a time.  Have a break, or use the handwriting as quick early morning activity.

If your child finds letter formation challenging, it's a good idea to write the letters as big as possible.  You can even use shampoo or shower gel and write them as large as possible on a tiled wall, shower screen or window!  Only focus on one letter at a time.

Maths:

BBC Bitesize clips are quick and sometime have a quiz to match the topic.

Purple Mash

Year 1 and 2 use Purple Mash to support learning across the curriculum.  Each child's login details can be found in their contact book however, if you need a remind please do not hesitate to contact me on Class Dojo.

Class Dojo

We use ClassDojos in school to reward children for brilliant conduct and fantastic learning.  Invites have been sent to the parents via e-mail so that the children can share their learning with me.  If you have not received an invitation to join, please check your junk/spam folders.  Otherwise, please contact the school by phone or email telling us the e-mail address that you would like to be contacted on; I will do my best to resend you the information you need as soon as I can.

Reading Eggs

Rye Primary School have purchased a subscription for all our children to access Reading Eggs. It supports each child’s learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons that allow children to progress at their own rate.  The Reading Eggs programme focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success.  With interactive animations, fun games, great songs and lots of rewards, Reading Eggs is a great place to learn to read. Children are highly motivated to return again and again. At Reading Eggs, learning to read is enjoyable as well as very rewarding. Every lesson ends with a new book and a new critter to add to your growing collection.

All children have their own login and password, which can be found in their home-school contact book.  However, if you need a reminder, please don't hesitate to contact me on ClassDojo.
Click here for further information about Reading Eggs.

Weekly Reading Following feedback from parents, children and Buster Book Club:

We are going to continue to run Busters' Book Club; this is a great scheme which celebrates reading children do outside school. Reading daily is so important and we would like them to read for 15 minutes daily.  Even if it isn't their school reading.  The children can send in their reading minutes on a Thursday as the classes with the most minutes will win extra treats!
Throughout lockdown, I am still keen to collect the children's reading minutes so  please continue to let me know how long they have read for.  Reading Eggs can count towards their total minutes.

Phonics

At Rye Community Primary School, we teach phonics at Key Stage 1 using the 'Letters and Sounds' programme.  Phonics Play provide a wide range of resources that support this.
Fast Phonics also provides further engaging activities.  They can be accessed here, using your child's Reading Eggs login.

English

Instead of a class book, we are exploring different poems.  Please take the opportunity to share these poems and any other poems and rhymes you know, including family favourites, limericks, nursery rhymes and rhymes in other languages.

Alphabet
Knowing the alphabet is an important  skill that children should know by the end of Year 1.  As they learn the many sounds that make up the English language, it is important that they recognise the letters by their letter names, as well as their sounds so that they can distinguish between different graphemes (letters and letter clusters) that make the same sound.  For example, the 'ay' sound can also be writtern 'ai', 'a-e', and 'ey'.
Here are some fun ways for them to get to know the letter names that make up the alphabet.

Learning Steps

  • Say the alphabet in order, saying the names of the letters not the sounds.
  • Put the alphabet in order
  • Match lower and upper case letters.
  • Put words in alphabetical order.
  • Sentence stacking - demonstration writing, using Writing Rainbow
  • Writing sentences, using capital letters to begin the sentences and for proper nouns.
  • Writing sentences, using a full stop at the end of the sentence.
  • Read writing aloud for sense and accuracy.
