Online Safety
The National Online Safety website provides, among others, guides with tips for parents to help keep children safe online. We have posted a few of those guides below for your information. Please visit https://nationalonlinesafety.com/hub/guide for more.

Welcome to Orcas Class page
Dear parents,
As ever, thank you for your continued support with remote learning.
Government guidelines state four hours of home learning is required to be completed daily by your child(ren) in KS2. As a school, we would like to encourage you to at least follow the weekly timetable, which you can find in the Learning This Term section and which will also be sent through ClassDojo.
I am looking forward to our meet up on Teams on Tuesday at 9.30am and Thursday at 11.00am. I will post some help to get you online and some dos and don'ts for the meet-up, on ClassDojo.
Please upload the work your child has completed in their ClassDojo portfolio, so I can give feedback and if needed adjust the planning. If children are finding something difficult we can spend a little bit longer on that topic, or I can personalise the learning for that week for your child. Please take a photograph of each piece of work separately or you can scan it. If you have an iPhone or iPad you can use the Notes App (open a new note, press the camera button, the option to scan document will pop up. Once the document is scanned you can email it easier than a photo, plus you can add notes to the scanned document).
Please note, as mentioned in the newsletter, there is no need to print off any sheets or lesson slides. We expect children to copy and complete the work neatly on a piece of (lined) paper as they would in class. If you need login details for ClassDojo or need help accessing it, please contact the school office.
Best wishes,
Mrs Danielle Smout
Learning activities Term 4

Our topic this term is 'Traders and Raiders', a history topic focusing on the Anglo Saxons and Scots. We shift our attention to what happened after the Roman army left Britain and a new invader took over. The big questions we will try to answer this term are how the Anglo-Saxons (and Jutes and Scots) shaped Britain, were they invaders, traders, or raiders? And were the Dark Ages, as this period in history is called, really dark?
We will be developing our reading skills this term using the book King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table by Marcia Williams, but we will start with a narrative poem: The Tale of Custard the Dragon by Ogden Nash. Our writing and reading will be focused on myths. We will also celebrate Book Week this term. Even our music topic is linked to this as our work will be based around the Dragon Song.
In science lessons, you will be learning different scientific skills, with one more lesson about 'Sound' and a few lessons on 'States of Matter'. You can look forward to a Science week, filled with interesting learning. In Computing your will be learning about using databases.
Learning activities w/c 01.03.21
Alternative work is for those children who are finding the work set for year 3 and year 4 too hard to access and complete. If your child is in year 4 and you find the work is too hard for them, please try year 3 work first, before choosing to complete the alternative work set.

- Take turns to make plans and predictions before reading: ‘I wonder if… what do you think?’ ‘You think… Oh, I thought…’
- Recap to check ideas and understanding as your child is reading: ‘So, you think that…’ ‘Did you expect…to happen?’ ‘Why do you think that happened?’
- Use encouragement and praise to keep children engaged in reading: ‘What brilliant ideas…let’s see what happens.’ ‘You thought so carefully about... What might happen now?’
- Share prior knowledge and past experiences that link to what is being read: ‘Have you learnt about…at school?’ ‘Do you remember when we watched…and found out about…’
- Tune-in and listen to your child – be curious about their interests: ‘I didn’t know you knew so much about…’ ‘I love reading stories about...with you.’
At school we use the Reading Rainbow to give children a reading focus (a lens to read with) and sentence starters to answer questions.
